I think I’m crazy…

These are some of the rarest cards you can find in Ultimate Masters.

And I have them.

I was shocked, these three cards alone are worth nearly $200, and hopefully, their value will only increase over time. This set will be exceptionally hard to finish simply based on the fact the singles are very hard to find and boosters are not cheap at all. I have no idea why I’m trying to complete this set in the first place. It helps nabbing 2 of the top three in prices in the first two boosters I’ve opened. So that’s a bit crazy.

And that prelude basically runs into this…

I’ve found a good detour to making tiles for mouse, and that is CCG. Now, I’m not just talking about collecting Magic cards, I’m talking about one of my young-self’s dream, building a CCG.

I know it sounds incredibly far fetched and an odd aspiration, especially since we live in such a vast digital world (even more so with gaming/sociability), this has been my dream ever since I ripped open a pack of Magic cards back in the early 90’s. Oh how much I kick myself for not finding my old collection, although, I missed the bus on alpha/beta and caught the revised/4th edition cards, so the cards I had were not crazy rare to begin with. Still, I love the nostalgia of collecting cards. I’ve collected thousands of cards from many games, mainly Magic, Overpower, Star Wars and even Pokemon, nothing beats the mini rush you get when you tear off the plastic of hidden, unknown cards underneath.

My goal in my CCG was to bring better game play to Magic, more players to Star Wars and more detail to Overpower. And with that ball of flames, add in DND (Dungeons and Dragons) elements to make it less static and more robust.

My childhood was filled with so many games and fads that my imagination ran circles tirelessly on end. Not only did I grow up with the best era of video games (retro 8/16/32bit), I dabbled in the aforementioned Magic, Pokemon, OverPower, and Star Wars, but I saw (and played) the rise of Pog, and it’s fall for that matter. I played HeroQuest and dungeons and dragons.

Basically what I would love is Dungeons and Dragons but in a CCG, but the CCG would work like Dungeons and Dragons, confusing, and weird, yes. But that’s what I want.

So this is my other oops. I’m making a digital “tester” per say, but unfortunately it’s quickly becoming more and more of a necessity to create the actual paper equivalent to hash out real game play, mainly because it’s a lot easier to code something that actually exists (set behavior properties) than it is to try one thing, but having to modify it could be an absolute nightmare.

I did however, benefit greatly from this prototype, (a lot of leg work was previously done from Traders), this demo is currently fully networked and I’ve addressed a few issues I’ve encountered in Traders (mainly the odd abnormalities).  I’m getting a lot better are creating a better framework for networking which will benefit future projects.

So yea, I’m now doing art on two fronts, digitally and physically, FML.

Being ill is not advised…

After a good few weeks battling a nasty little cold/flu, I think I can say I’m on the up and up. You see, I’m very stubborn. If I feel a certain way about something, that’s the way I see it. I’ll see it that way until someone/something or time proves otherwise. Secondly, I hate taking medications. I hold off until the bitter end. Well, that finally came up when I had a hard time sleeping through the night, and trust me, I love my sleep. Of course I still feel like a bag of ass, but I’m much better now.

So let’s talk about delays shall we? I was hoping to finish Traders before I head back to school in late October, but I’m feeling it isn’t about to happen. I can hear the vast following (har har) sighing. But here’s what’s up. First and foremost, (and already mentioned), I’ve felt like crap. There has been days where I haven’t even turned on my computer to look at it. And honestly, my computer is on nearly every minute I’m at home, so that’s an oddity.

Next, NHL15 came out a couple of weeks ago (well, little more than a week, but I don’t count… [yeah I do]… ), and I’m deeply involved yet again even though I haven’t been able to play a whole bunch as of late. I’ve also fired up Diablo III (xbox360) again and have been playing that off and on when the friends aren’t able to play NHL.

And down the ladder, hockey season is about to roar up again. That means ball hockey is coming back, WHL hockey starts tomorrow and the NHL camps are under-way this week. Lots of days are getting eaten up just by hobbies.

Finally…

A long time ago (in a galaxy far far away), I used to play a lot of card games. I’m not talking about ‘Canasta’, although I did play a lot of those cards back in the day, and still do. I’m talking about CCG’s. Collectible Card Games. I’m very determined to collect sets and I NEED to have all the cards. This is troublesome when it comes to a wide variety of games that I used to play. Bare with my nerdy-ness… I played Magic: The Gathering, OverPower, Star Wars CCG and Pokemon. Yeah, I even played fucking Pokemon. That’s a lot of dineros. The worst part is that I’ve kind of got back into Magic. I bought a few packs and decided to not really play, but just to collect. I found my old card collecting sheets and placed the ones I’ve got in their respected slots. Well… I’m only 24 cards short of the set now. Ooops. But any way, that wasn’t the point I was going to get to.

This is…

I’m creating my own CCG. It’s yet to be named. It’s a interesting hybrid of Magic and Star Wars with some familiar DnD elements. I’m pretty excited about it. I’ll end up posting a project page when I get more of the rules finalized and some testing done. I’m currently in the process of creating cards from a database I’ve created. These cards are simple placeholders and hold the vital information for testing. They have no names but rather just the information. Maybe I’ll be on Dragon’s Den some day?

Peace out!

Cleaning out my closet.

Well, its more of a room really. Been hard at doing some daily chores the last couple of days, could be because of having the last couple of them off from work. Its been delightful having the time off, especially since I’ve made a bit of progress on Traders, which I’ll discuss later.

First off, I was cleaning out a bit of a junk room. Mainly all the stuff that really didn’t fit anywhere else, old paperwork, boxes of stuff I haven’t touched in a while, extra tools and mainly my desktop computer. Any who, I stumbled upon my collection of Star Wars CCG cards. So, respectfully, I catalogued them, then did the unthinkable, I tossed out my doubles. I never really thought I could. But it really felt like I was letting go of my childhood a bit. I was okay with it. The one thing I couldn’t find was my Magic cards. I’m not entirely sure where the hell those are. Hmm… the days when Magic was simple. I can’t even remember how to play. I almost bought a few packs just to bring back some nostalgia. I woke up a bit and remembered that I wouldn’t really touch them, I wouldn’t know which ones were valuable and I’d have no one to play with. If I could find packs of the first few sets I’d buy those in a heartbeat. (Opens Google search…)

Oops, anyway, found out I played in roughly the 3rd edition era, perhaps even a little bit before that. Playing POG and Overpower as well clouds my memory. I don’t even remember how to play OP either, I just remember it was super simple and there was a Reserve character. I couldn’t find my Batman either… damn it.

Anyway, back to Traders. I’ve spent the last couple of days re-factoring it and making the game smoother. I’ve moved the players’ information to the right spot which was once occupied by the chat section. I then moved the chat to the top of the screen and can (well, will be) be opened/collapsed by pressing the ’tilde’ (~).

I’m pumped to get this game out of my hands. Soon enough, soon enough…
